Cricket’s Rising Presence in the United States: A Cultural Shift in American Sports

Cricket’s presence in the United States has been steadily growing, and two significant events have contributed to this cultural shift:

  • 1. Major League Cricket (MLC):

Last year, Major League Cricket launched its first season, featuring six professional teams. This T20 tournament, now in its 9th edition, has garnered substantial attention among cricket fans in the U.S. The league’s inclusion of traditional American sporting rituals, such as playing the national anthem before games and providing glitzy entertainment during innings breaks, has helped bridge the gap between cricket and American sports culture12.

  • 2. ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024:

The U.S. is co-hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time. This milestone event brings some of the biggest cricket teams and matches to American soil. Sixteen out of the 55 tournament matches will be held in the U.S., including the opening match between Canada and the U.S. in Dallas, Texas. The interest levels for these matches have been exceptional, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for cricket in the country3.

These developments signify a revival of cricket in the U.S., and the sport is gradually becoming an integral part of American sports culture. With the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics to be held in Los Angeles, the momentum continues to build. It’s a rare opportunity for fans to experience elite-level cricket, and Dallas, with its large South Asian diaspora and successful hosting of MLC, is emerging as a cricket hub in the USA45. 🏏🇺🇸
